Dr. H. L. (Roger) Chen, Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University (WVU). Dr. Chen received his undergraduate civil engineering education from National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taiwan and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in structural engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1985 and 1988, respectively. He joined WVU in 1989 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 1995 and promoted to Full Professor in 2000. He has been extensively involved with research on structural dynamics, nondestructive evaluation (NDE), wave propagation, and dynamic soil-structure interaction, and has led the advancement and development of applying acoustic emission and other NDE techniques to concrete, composites, timber and ceramic materials. He currently conducts research projects in the areas of rigid concrete pavement, dynamic characterization of damaged structures, acoustic emission of steel bridges, radar detection of deteriorated concrete bridge decks and pavements, laser vibration sensor and NDE of ceramic candle filters. He has actively published more than 100 technical articles, including 40 refereed papers. He is a member of ASNT, ACI, and ASCE. He is also a member of the ACI committees of lunar concrete, NDE of concrete and FRP reinforced concrete, and ASCE committees of shock and vibratory effects of STD and dynamics committee of EMD. Dr. Chen is the recipient of the Young Researcher of the Year Award, 1991-1992, from WVU College of Engineering. Dr. Chen also received Outstanding Researcher Award, WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources for the year 2000-2001.
