Honorary Academy Member Schaub Passes Away

Honorary member of the West Virginia Academy of Civil Engineers Dr. James H. Schaub passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.

Schaub passed away at his North Florida Retirement Village home in Gainesville, Florida.

Schaub completed high school in Washington, D.C., where he was a page in the U.S. House of Representatives. Following service in the Army during World War II and Korea, he completed his education in civil engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Harvard and Purdue.

Schaub was a professional engineer, practicing in several states before starting an academic career teaching at VPI. In 1960, he was named professor and chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at West Virginia University, where he later became associate dean of engineering. In 1969, he became professor and chairman of civil engineering at the University of Florida, where he retired as Distinguished Service Professor in 1992.

During the latter period of his academic career, Dr. Schaub actively promoted the interaction of engineering and the humanities. He co edited two books in this area of study and authored numerous technical and professional papers of civil engineering interest. He was affiliate professor of history at UF, held the Conquest Chair of Humanities at VMI in 1986, and was a visiting professor at Swarthmore College, with a teaching responsibility in professionalism and ethics.

An American Society of Civil Engineers Fellow, Dr. Schaub served as president of the West Virginia Section and the Gainesville Branch. In 2006, he was inducted into the WVU Academy of Civil Engineering. He was honored by ASCE with the first W.H. Wisely Award and was named Engineer of the Year by the Florida Section. He was a member and a national director of the American Public Works Association.

His wife, the former Malinda Bailey of Radford, Va., was active in many aspects of church, community and university life until her death in 2005.
